The re-hydration fluid is produced in a limited quantity, in government hospitals, mainly at Bir Hospital and in some zonal hospitals. This production covers approximately the normal medical and surgical needs. So far, in case of cholera epidemic, the fluids have been imported, usually from India. But, should a severe epidemic break out simultaneously in both countries, India may not at that time be in a position to supply the fluids to Nepal. This is the reason why an extension of the existing facilities is desired. Furthermore, a larger quantity of fluids would be available for other purposes, in particular for re-hydation of children and those affected by other acute diarrhoeal diseases.
