The price of most staple food commodities increased during July. The price of rice increased on average by 3 percent, black gram by 7 percent, lentils by 2 percent and the price of wheat increased by 1 percent. In recent months, vegetable and fruit prices have increased sharply across Nepal due to reduced supply. The average price of potato in Nepal is more than double last year’s price. The price of cabbage is nearly 5 times higher than one year ago. Monsoon rain has caused landslides and damage to roads and trails which has disrupted supply, particularly in some Hill and Mountain districts, including the Karnali region. The price of most staple food commodities increased during July. The price of rice increased on average by 3 percent, black gram by 7 percent, lentils by 2 percent and the price of wheat increased by 1 percent. Price increases are common at this time of year when Nepal enters its lean season. However, food prices are particularly high across Nepal due to the recent winter drought and are likely to continue to rise until the next harvest in October/November. This is largely due to the winter drought, which hampered production; however, the situation is being exasperated by strikes and bandhs which regularly disrupt the movement of goods between the Terai and Kathmandu. The price of potato is currently more than double the price at the same time last year Cooking oil prices are continuing to gradually decreasefollowing the price peak towards the end of 2008. Compared to last month, mustard oil is down by 3 percent and soybean oil is down by 4 percent The price of chicken in major consumer markets fell by around 3 percent this month. A recent announcement of price increases (Nrs 5 for live chickens and Nrs 7 per processed) by poultry entrepreneurs in Kathmandu will increase prices for the commodity in August.
