Nepal, the National Population and Housing Census is carried out at decennial intervals to identify detailed information about the size and structure of the population.According to the last census carried out in 2011, the total population of Nepal is 26,494,504 of which 10,689,842 are youth aged 16-40 years, the age definition of youth as per the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS). The total youth population of Nepal includes 54.5% of female population and 45.8% of male population. Similarly, the sex ratio among the youth is 84 males per 100 females. Literacy rate of 16-25 years age group is 80% whereas it is 61.3% for 26-40 years age group. Out of the total youth, 748,000 males and 644,000 females have passed the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) or its equivalent degree 1,475,692 youth (i.e. nearly 14% of the total youth) have been found to be abroad for employment and education. 162,548 youth (i.e. 1.52% of the total youth) have some kind of disability, of which 55% are males and 45% are females. In terms of usual activities performed by youth, the proportion of male population aged 16-25 years engaged in study is 50.06% whereas 37.21% of those in 26-40 years age group are engaged in waged/salaried work. However, the highest proportion of the female youth of 16-25 years and 26-40 years age group are engaged in study (37.53%) and household chores (39.2% Population respectively.Population of the 16-40 years age group is considered as the youth population in Nepal.According to the 2011 Census, the total youth population in Nepal is 10,689,842 (40.3% of the total population). Among them, 45.8% are males and 54.5% are females. Kathmandu district has the highest proportion of the youth population i.e. 52.9% whereas Pyuthan district has the lowest proportion of youth population i.e. 32.7% to its total population.
