The project was a timely intervention aiming to strengthen the institutional capacities at all levels for reducing seismic risks, and to plan and implement earthquake risk reduction and disaster recovery preparedness measures in selected municipalities. The project has greatly contributed to earthquake preparedness planning and safe construction practices for new buildings and
retrofitting of existing poorly constructed unsafe buildings in Nepal. Mainly the project enhanced the skills of construction engineers, architects and masons about safe building design and construction. One of the program municipalities has already commenced implementation of National Building Code, while others are in the process of commencing the same in near future. The project further supported to conduct several studies and assessments related to urban seismic risks, safe construction practices, and vulnerability of mobile telephone towers, test and demonstration of retrofitting techniques. The country programmer is designed to strengthen the institutional and community level capacity to plan and implement earthquake risk reduction strategies and disaster recovery preparedness in Nepal, a country that stands at 11th rank in the world with respect to vulnerability to earthquake hazards (BCPR, 2004).
