Livelihood Recovery for Peace (LRP) Project
PDF File Size: 1.22 MB | Download
The overall objective of this integrated community-based project is to contribute to restoring the foundations for sustainable development by strengthening the capacities of communities and local institutions to achieve sustained livelihood recovery and peace building. The focus is on promoting
peace at the local level, improving household/community livelihood, contributing to local economic recovery, enhancing social cohesion and strengthening institutional capacities of GoN and nongovernmental
organizations to plan, coordinate, and deliver livelihood initiatives. Because of the negative impacts of disasters and conflicts in Nepal, this project pursues its goal through a disaster risk and conflict prevention lens, whereby conflict and hazard mapping are at the core of the livelihood assessments,
strategy development, and implementation processes. The 20 southern plains districts of Nepal that border India have most of Nepal’s productive farmland, large areas of valuable forest and most of Nepal’s industry. In spite of this wealth many inhabitants of this Tarai area live in poverty and suffer serious socio-economic disadvantage. The long-standing grievances of the people of this area came to the surface in early 2007 as the Madhes Andolan(uprising) disrupted life across the Tarai with violence between hill and Madhesi people. Many of the grievances had yet to be addressed and the area was characterised by frequent strikes and shutdowns (bandhs) and weak law and order. In 2009, the Livelihood Recovery for Peace project (LRP) was launched in the three poorest and most conflict-affected districts of the Tarai. Sarlahi, Mahottari and Rautahat are the districts where poverty, conflict and natural disasters most hinder development. The 1.7 million people of this area have a mixed makeup with 40% from traditionally disadvantaged groups.
