During their historic meeting this past week in the United States, President George W. Bush and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh discussed a wide range of regional issues, including democracy in Nepal. “There was discussion about the wider region and South Asia,” State Department Undersecretary for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns said at a press briefing on Monday July 18. “And they agreed that on the case of Nepal, it’s going to be critical for the King of Nepal to restore civil liberties. And both of them hoped that would happen as soon as possible.” As the two biggest democracies in world, the United States and India agreed to a new global partnership during the visit. We've never had relationship in nearly 60 years with India like ones we have now established,” Burns added. “But one of the things that we’re now doing much more frequently with the Indians is having conversations about how we can cooperate together on issues like Iraq, Afghanistan, Nepal, Burma, and more broadly define how we can operate together globally.” This Oval Office conversation represents highest level American conversation yet on the state of democracy in Nepal, and the President and Prime Minister were in close agreement on the issue. Both the United States and India remain committed to seeing a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Nepal and both firmly believe the government of Nepal needs to reach out to the legitimate political parties to unite on a common agenda to return to democracy and to combat Maoist insurgency.
