UNHCR Nepal observes World Water Day in the Bhutanese Refugee Camps
PDF File Size: 56 KB | Download
Water is critical for sustainable development, including environmental integrity and the alleviation of poverty and hunger, and is indispensable for human health and well-being. The United Nations General Assembly at its 58th session in December 2003 agreed to proclaim years 2005 to 2015 as International Decade for Action,"Water for Life", and beginning with World Water Day, March 22,2005. The main goals of the Decade are to draw public attention to water-related issues, to promote wider participation and involvement of women in water sector management and ultimately to help achieve internationally agreed water-related targets. UNHCR Nepal, joining the global effort, is observing World Water Day on 22March 2005 by organizing various activities and events in the Bhutanese refugee camps in eastern Nepal. Clean–up campaigns, art and essay competitions for school children, and awareness/information sessions will be held in the seven refugee camps. In the Bhutanese refugee camps, UNHCR supplies piped water at an average of 22 litres per person per day. In the seven camps where over 105,000 refugees reside, the water system is centrally controlled and distributed through pipes. The water is pumped from deep wells and into overhead tanks where it is then chlorinated and subsequently distributed two to three times per day in the camps. The water quality is tested twice per
month by taking samples from a)the overhead tanks; b)collection points at the tap stands; and c)household containers. Water quality results are shared with public health organisations. The water supplied to the refugees is known to be the best quality water in the area of operation.
