World Press Freedom Day Statement of the UN in Nepal
PDF File Size: 155 KB | Download
Freedom of expression and freedom of the press are basic human rights. To commemorate these freedoms, the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 declared 3 May as World Press Freedom Day. On this day, the UN System in Nepal reiterates that the principles of press freedom and freedoms of expression are sacrosanct. Nepal has made great strides in developing print, radio and television media over the last fifteen years. The UN system believes that these advances need to be nurtured, especially during a time when the principles outlined above have been put to the test. The Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal (1990) and the Press and Publication Act (1991) have actively safeguarded freedoms of opinion and expression, press freedom, and the right to information. Even after the lifting of the State of Emergency, freedom of expression remains suspended with the media continuing to face either direct or indirect censorship. Since 1 February, there has been consistent intimidation of journalists throughout the country and scores of journalists have lost their jobs. The arrests and countrywide harassment of journalists represent attacks on the freedom of
expression, which the UN has a mission to defend. On the occasion of World Press Freedom day, the UN System in Nepal wishes to remind His Majesty’s Government of its obligations to the people of Nepal as a State Party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
