UNDP opened today its first field office in the regional capital of Nepalgunj in Midwestern Nepal on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations. The new office will help better coordinate and manage the delivery of aid in five districts of the mid and far western regions namely Banke, Pyuthan, Kailali, Dadeldhura and Baitadi. The objective of this pilot initiative is to improve access to some of most remote and poor communities, improve monitoring and provide better safety and security to the project staff. It will enable UNDP to respond effectively to the needs of the people and guarantee speedy and full accountability of its projects. "By getting closer to affected villages, we are hoping to reach the poorest communities and the most vulnerable groups," said UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Mr. Ghulam Isaczai. "This is particularly timely as we are celebrating today the UN 60th anniversary under the theme 'A time for renewal'- a time when the international community focuses on building a better and safer world through collective security and a global partnership for development", he added. According to a recent report, intensifying violence and political instability have been hampering effective utilization of aid and has taken a heavy toll on the economy and the people. According to the Nepal Human Development Report 2004, “Certain historically excluded regions, notably the mid-western and far western development regions, remain the home of most of Nepal’s poorest and most disadvantaged people,
both Dalits and Janajatis, along with the children, women and disabled among them.”
