Universal Access for Children Affected by AIDS in Nepal (UCAAN) UNICEF, FHI, NAP+N and USAID Initiate a Partnership

UNICEF, family health international the national association of people living with HIV/AIDS in nepal AP+N and the united states government through the US agency for international development (USAID) are launchinga partnership on 29 november 2007 support the government of nepal in achieving universal access for children and their families to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.the partnership seeks protection, care and support for children affected by AIDS, with the goal of ensuring early entry into care and treatment for HIV-exposed children and to increase access to comprehensive services for children throughout the country. the partnership also aims to prevent mother to child HIV transmission.Children account for half of all the new HIV infections worldwide and it is estimated that approximately four thousand children in nepal are infected with HIV. with an estimated seventy thousand people living with HIV in nepal, there are tremendous implications for children, whose lives are greatly affected when a parent is infected.UNICEF is a worldwide multilateral leader in children’s issues helping children survive, thrive and develop from childhood to adolescence. USAID has provided major technical and financial support to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic worldwide and is committed to supporting nepal to achieve universal access to prevention, care and treatment.
