UNHCR and WFP Aiming At Awareness and Prevention Commemorate World Aids Day
PDF File Size: 64 KB | Download
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have joined hands with the refugees in camps in eastern Nepal, and locals from the surrounding community, to organize an awareness-raising concert commemorating World AIDS Day on 01 December. The concert, the first of its kind to take place in the refugee camps, will convey messages to both refugees
and the surrounding communities on awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS, with a particular emphasis on the importance of getting tested for HIV and knowing one’s HIV status. A mobile Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) unit, provided by the Association of Medical Doctors of Asia (AMDA), an implementing partner, will be on site during the concert to provide free testing services. HIV prevalence in Nepal is said to be steadily increasing, with some estimates suggesting as many as 100,000 may currently be living with the virus in the country. The border districts of Nepal are
particularly vulnerable to women and girl trafficking, with large numbers of migrant labor movements between the neighbouring countries in the region. In Nepal, the UN refugee agency and the UN WFP have been working in partnership for the some 106,000 refugees mostly originating from Bhutan sheltering in seven camps in eastern Nepal since 1992.
