The Government of Australia, Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA), has contributed US$ 432,595 towards the UN refugee agency’s 2006/2007 Annual Budget Programme for Nepal plus USD 101,756 for the protection of, and assistance to internally displaced persons in Nepal, bringing to a total of US $ 534,351 the Australian contribution to UNHCR’s programmes in Nepal. “We are grateful to the Government and people of Australia for this generous contribution,” said UNHCR’s Representative in Nepal, Abraham Abraham. “This contribution will go toward funding priority activities for the refugees from Bhutan in the areas of health and nutrition, education in addition to repair and maintenance needs of refugee shelters,” added Abraham. “The contribution will also go towards funding UNHCR’s protection and
assistance programmes to Internally Displaced Persons in Nepal," said Abraham.
Australia is a major donor to UNHCR and has committed US $ 13,256,778 to
UNHCR’s 2006 worldwide Annual Programme Budget. With a mandate to protect the world's 20.7 million refugees and other persons of concern including asylum-seekers and some internally displaced persons, UNHCR is entirely funded by direct, voluntary contributions from governments, non-governmental organizations and individuals.
