Today, people in the most flood-affected districts of Banke and Bardiya started receiving an emergency relief package of rice, oil, lentils and salt from the United Nations World Food Programme. Distributions in Kailali should also start early next week. WFP’s initial response to provide 10,000 families (around 60,000 people) with three months of food rations was based upon the initial needs identified by the NRCS and requested by the Government of Nepal (GoN). Over 33 districts have been impacted by days of incessant monsoon rains. In addition to Banke, Bardiya and Kailali, some of the most impacted districts include Mahottari, Dhanusa, Parsa, Siraha and Saptari. In Saptari and Siraha districts, more than 13,000 families have been affected by
flooding. These are also the same districts where ethnic tension and insecurity have paralyzed life over the last eight months.
