Integrated Health Strategies Can Save Children’s Lives, says UNICEF Flagship, State of the World’s Children Report 2008
PDF File Size: 91 KB | Download
"Child Survival in Nepal has shown impressive progress over the past decades," says UNICEF Nepal Representative, Ms. Gillian Mellsop. "Nepal is one of the seven countries in the world that has been successful in cutting child mortality by two thirds, and is very much on track in reaching the Millennium Development target in 2015. What is commendable for Nepal is that we were able to make this progress in spite of the socio-political turbulence the country was going through during the last decade." Indicators in the Demographic and Health Survey of 2006 show that the infant and under-five mortality rates in Nepal dropped by more than 25 percent since 2001. The under five mortality
which currently stands at 61 deaths for every 1000 live births dropped by 67 percent in the last decade itself. Laying focus on preventing neo-natal deaths is one way to ensure that the graph of infant mortality goes further down to meet the MDG target. Other strategies to improve child survival even more would be to scale up primary health service, ensure access to the most marginalized
communities and to reduce chronic malnutrition amongst children and babies.
