Junior 8 (J8) is the youth event linked to the G8 Summit and organized by UNICEF. J8 aims to advance young people’s understanding of global issues and to provide a platform for them to discuss and advocate on these issues with some of the most powerful leaders in the world. The participants include teams of four young people e aged 13-17 from each of the G8 member countries: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Russian Federation, UK and USA. An additional seven J8 delegates from developing countries representing regions throughout the world were selected to participate by UNICEF staff based on their involvement in projects and programmes related to the main themes of the G8 Summit. All of the J8 participants will travel to Japan for the opening of the G8, nine of whom, (8 from each of the G8 country, and one from the other countries) will be selected to present their views to world leaders gathered for the summit Samrat Yash Bikram Basnet, a 14-year-old tenth grader from Madesha in Sunsari district has gone to Hokkaido as a representative of the youth from South Asia. A student of Janata Secondary School in Madesha, Samrat was nominated through a democratic process by children affiliated with the District Network of Child Clubs of Sunsari and Morang. Last week Samrat was one of the panelists of young J8 delegates participating in a debate on young people's issues for the G8 leaders over "World Today" on the BBC World Service. Samrat spoke of the need for the leaders to focus on child survival, and the importance of saving young
lives. At the J8 Summit in Hokkaido, Samrat has shown interest to stress on the issues of child survival, the plight of treet and working children, as well as the impact of global warming on the Himalaya with the shrinking of glaciers and the formation of glacial lakes.
