The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. António Guterres, is scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu on Tuesday, 22 May for a three-day mission, his first official visit to Nepal. While in Nepal, Mr. Guterres is expected to meet the Prime Minister of Nepal, Mr. Girija Prasad Koirala, high level government officials, heads of UN Agencies and UNHCR’s donors. The refugee situation in Nepal is one of the most protracted in the Asia region. During his visit the High Commissioner will focus attention on current efforts to alleviate long-standing plight of the refugees and the need for comprehensive
solutions. UNHCR has been very much encouraged by the efforts of a group of
interested countries to assist in resolving this protracted situation. On Wednesday, Mr. Guterres will travel to Goldhap refugee camp in Jhapa district in eastern Nepal in order to get a firsthand view of the situation of the refugees and UNHCR operations. In co-operation with the National Unit for the Coordination of Refugee Affairs of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the UN refugee agency provides protection and assistance to over 107,000 refugees from Bhutan in seven camps in Jhapa and Morang districts in eastern Nepal, together with the UN World Food Programme and NGO partners.
