The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today announced that Dr. Suresh R. Sharma, a Nepali citizen and graduate of Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, has been appointed Inspector General and Director of WFP’s Oversight Services Division at
its Rome headquarters. Sharma – who began his career at WFP as a Budget Analyst in 1989 - will oversee the Internal Audit, Inspection and Investigation functions. With a budget of US$6 billion, WFP plans to feed 90 million people this year. WFP has been providing food assistance in Nepal since 1967. With an operating budget of more than US$160 million, WFP will provide more than 3.5 million Nepalese and 108,000 Bhutanese refugees with live-saving food assistance over the next two years. WFP Food for
Asset programmes help people struggling to recover from conflict, high food prices and an onslaught of natural disasters by rebuilding critical infrastructure and increasing economic opportunities aimed at improving their longer-term food security. Vulnerable women and children receive life-saving fortified food through school feeding, and maternal and child health projects.
