Education Ministers and other high-level education officials from countries in South Asia, along with major education donors and development agencies will meet in Kathmandu from 16-19 June 2008 to discuss ways to ensure the delivery of quality Education for All (EFA). The conference, organized by UNESCO, will review existing policies, identify policy gaps, and prepare policy and strategy recommendations and action plans to reach the EFA goals. Participants will use as basis results from the national and sub-regional Mid-Decade Assessment reports that examined the progress of countries in meeting the EFA goals. EFA is a commitment made by countries and partners to deliver quality education for all children, youth and adults by 2015. Nepal is a signatory to this commitment made in 1990 and renewed in 2000. The Nepal Ministry of Education and Sports has also just released its national EFA MDA report and will launch it at the conference. UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education Director, Sheldon Shaeffer will deliver a keynote address to the conference and present highlights of the 2008 EFA Global Monitoring Report. The Education Minister of Sri Lanka, Hon. A.D. Susil Premajayantha; the Education Minister of Maldives, Hon. Zahiya Zareer; and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education of Bangladesh Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan will be attending the conference along with other-high level education officials from Bhutan, India, Nepal and Pakistan. The secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports Mr. Balananda Paudel wiil address the opening session and high level education officials will participate in the conference from Nepal.
