The National Health Policy 1991 of the Ministry of Health and Population of the Government of Nepal aims to extend the primary health care system to the rural population so that they benefit from modern medical facilities and trained health care providers in the areas of promotive, preventive and curative services. Following this policy, the National Health Education, Information and Communication Centre
(NHEICC) was established under the Department of Health Services in 1993, with a mandate to give high priority to information, education and communication in the health sector but since 2002 following organization reforms NHEICC comes directly under the Ministry of Health and Population. The goal of this Centre is to contribute to the attainment of the highest level of health status of the peopleThis report presents findings from a further analysis study undertaken as a part of the follow up to 2011 Nepal Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) on Tobacco Data. This report has been prepared with the technical assistance from The Population, Health and Development (PHD) Group in the leadership of National Health Education, Information and Communication Centre (NHEICC), Teku, Kathmandu. The opinions expressed herein are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of any other agencies. This report is a part of the NHEICC/MoHP program, which is designed to collect, analyze and disseminate data of Further Analysis of 2011 Nepal Demographic and Health Survey on Tobacco Data. Each year, tobacco use kills six million people worldwide. In Nepal too, tobacco use prevalence is high as indicated by several studies. It is a threat to our health and economic prosperity. While lung cancer is the most well-known consequence of smoking, large number of lives is lost as a result of cardiovascular disease. It is also the leading cause of death attributable to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
