The World Food Programme welcomed assurances received today from the Government of Nepal that its food was not the source of a diarrhea outbreak in the Mid and Far West
of Nepal. The Secretary expressed the Government’s support and appreciation of WFP’s lifesaving work and its efforts to “ensure food security for the most remote food deficit areas of the country.” The Government said it planned to transparently investigate claims made by civil society and proposed a joint mission including WFP technical specialists in this process. Accordingly, the Government requested WFP to continue food distributions to the more than two million people across the country under its current programs. Government has also asked WFP to consider increasing activities in coming months as the country has faced both a winter and summer drought. WFP has been assisting Nepal’s poorest and most vulnerable for more than 40 years. WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency and the UN’s frontline agency for hunger solutions. In 2009, WFP aims to feed 108 million people in 74 countries.
