Without electronic intervention into reference library, the productivity and effectiveness of conventional reference library has been statistic and limited for few people around physical library. Online publication repository can address a wide range of audience with its potential reference materials available in the center. The digital repository also contributes to make availability of old and ancient documents to students, researchers, academicians, government, and non-governmental organizations of Nepal following mandates of United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Nepal. UNIC develops and maintains a comprehensive collection of print and online materials on United Nations-related issues. The fundamental mission of the UNDRN is to preserve institutional memory of reports and publications produced by UN agencies in Nepal and make it accessible to everyone. The project consists of software engineering, date server installation, connectivity, content and content development and the duration is from January 2014 to June 2015. The home page of the United Nations Digital Repository Nepal (UNDRN) contains a “Search” toolbox at the middle of the screen in order to enhance the user’s capability of searching publications and the number of available documents is displayed right above the engine. Anew user, by default, is known as a “Guest” and is cable of searching, viewing and downloading numerous publications. The guest may not, however, upload, edit or audit documents. One may also request for a United Nations web account through an option presented under the “Sign In” box after which the user will be asked to fill in a form (shown below) that will be verified by the United Nations within 24 hours. UNRN can be internally within UN House accessed by using un.org.np and a public URL will be defined by June 2015 when the database will be made available to public. Users may also find an option to view the Data Visualization under “Document”.
Data visualization is a knowledge inventory to identify and locate knowledge assets featured on the UNDRN database.Users may find that the key terms are segregated according to the year and will see the number of available articles next to each word or phrase (shown below). The list dates back to 1948, three years later after the formation of the United Nations and is more detailed from 1951, when Nepal joined the UN.The “Blog” option on the top right side of the screen features regular updates on success stories and analytical articles of UNDRN. The blog is maintained by UNIC’s Knowledge Management Associate and team.
