The UN’s top climate change official was in Nepal from 28 to 30 April for a series of engagements linked to a major community adaptation conference.Christiana Figures, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is leading the preparations for the next round of talks to take place at the UN Climate Change Conference this year in Lima, Peru. There, governments have agreed to put forward a first draft of a new universal agreement on climate change to be finalized in 2015 in Paris. While in Nepal, Ms. Figures attended official bilateral meetings with key government figures, and met Prime Minister Sushil Koirala.She also met with youth activists when she addressed the National Youth Conference on Climate Change, hosted by Nepalese Youth for Climate Action. The youth ummit was designed to bring Nepalese youths together to discuss climate change and sustainable development issues.Ms. Figures also delivered a keynote address at the 8th International Community Based Adaptation conference organized by the Government of Nepal together with Clean Energy Nepal, Bangladesh Cent re for Advance Studies and the International Institute for Environment and Development.Ms. Figueres also visited a site to see Improved Cook Stove Programmer, where clean-burning, efficient cook stoves are being manufactured and distributed to households in the Far Western Development Region, the poorest region in Nepal. The programmer is registered under the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism.She also inspected Biocomp Nepal, an organic waste compost project in Kathmandu, honored as one of the UNFCCC secretariat's Momentum for Change 2012 Lighthouse Activities. Biocomp Nepal is an example of sustainable local economics: both reducing the greenhouse gases that cause climate change and using the byproduct to improve local farming. (UN Newsletter)
