Nepal’s human rights record faced the scrutiny of the United Nations Human Rights Committee for the second time on Tuesday 18 March and Wednesday 19 March in meetings that was webcast live. Nepal is one of the 167 states parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which is one of the primary international human rights treaties, and so is required to undergo regular examinations of its human rights record before the Human Rights Committee. The Committee, which is composed of 18 independent experts, engaged in a dialogue with the Nepalese delegation on questions relating to the promotion and protection of human rights in the country. Nepal has submitted a report on implementation of its human rights obligations to the Committee and a number of non governmental organizations have also sent reports for the Committee’s consideration.
