The UN Country Team – made up of some 20 UN agencies - that working together can truly become ‘greater than the sum of our parts’. Surely, the same can surely be said for Rotary International, a truly global federation of some 1.2 million Rotarian in over 32,000 clubs across more than 200 countries and territories. As Rotary nears the $2 billion mark in investments in development projects since 1947 it has surely earned its place in the pantheon of key development actors since the decolonization process began in the aftermath of WWII. Rotary’s strength is not primarily its financial resources but its real strength lies in its people, its volunteers, its activists, its organizers. Water pumps delivering safe water where there had been water- borne disease. The work of volunteers through groups like Rotary, or the many associations, groups and clubs that populate Nepal, in a very real sense, allow society to function. They are the glue that turns households into communities, mere ‘states’ into ‘nations’.
