The conservation of the Marker Stone, the Nativity Sculpture and the Ashoka
Pillar, the three most emblematic monuments at Lord Buddha’s birthplace in
Lumbini, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, will start in April this year, without the need to remove the monuments from their original places.
An international conservation team led by Italian conservator Costantino Meucci
have just returned from Lumbini, where the team completed the training of a
group of national experts from the Lumbini Development Trust and the
Department of Archaeology. The national experts will join Meucci’s team in
Lumbini in April, when the conservation of the three monuments will be carried
within, and outside of the Maya Devi Temple. Director-General of the Department of Archeology Bishnu Karki said: “The conservation of the three monuments in Lumbini will save them from further deterioration though human interference.
“We will provide all facilities so that the work can be successfully completed in situ in Lumbini and in the shortest time possible”. Lumbini Development Trust Vice-Chairperson Archarya Karma Sangpo Lama said: “We look forward to the work of the team here in Lumbini that will help us to better conserve the objects with all their religious and spiritual significance.”
