The UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Ms. Kyung-wha Kang, will arrive in Nepal on 18 April for a three-day official visit. She will meet with
representatives of the Government, national human rights institutions and civil society organisations. Ms. Kang will make an address to Constituent Assembly members at an event organised by the Legislature Parliamentary Committee on International Relations and Human Rights to call for the promulgation of a Constitution that fully embraces international human rights standards and the adoption of the human rights related legislation, including those establishing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Inquiry on Disappearances. She will also participate in a national consultation on access to justice for victims of caste-based discrimination organised by the UN human rights office(OHCHR)with the involvement of the National Dalit Commission, and a roundtable on discriminatory citizenship provisions against women, organized by the National Women’s Commission in Kathmandu. During her visit, the Deputy High Commissioner will be advocating for the swift establishment of two transitional justice mechanisms: the Commission of Inquiry on Disappearance and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to ensure truth, justice and redress for victims. She will also be calling for the prosecution of those responsible for serious human rights violations committed both during and after the conflict, and for the
implementation of recommendations provided by UN member states during the
Universal Periodic Review of Nepal's human rights situation in January this year.
