More than 200,000 Nepalis will receive help to address food insecurity and support for life-saving response to children under five, thanks to a US$ 5 million allocation this week from the United National Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). “This timely allocation from the CERF will help address some of the most urgent humanitarian needs of the most vulnerable communities in Nepal. Overall the projects supported will benefit more than 75,000 food
insecure people and 125,000 children” said Robert Piper, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nepal. “Many remote communities in Nepal continue to experience a silent emergency around food security, malnutrition and threats of epidemics from water-borne diseases” he added. The funds will support three major activities managed by the UN Children’s Fund, the World Health Organisation, the UN Human Settlements Programme, the World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organisation. One project will focus on nutrition for children under five, lactating mothers and pregnant women through integrated nutrition, water hygiene, sanitation and health interventions. These
activities will reach more than 100,000 children under the age of five in 10 districts. A second project will deliver food assistance for severely food insecure populations in Bajura, Mugu and Kalikot districts. The project will also provide immediate support by rehabilitating and constructing essential
food security related infrastructure such as drinking water systems and agricultural infrastructure.
