Life-Skills are “the abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable
individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life.” The UNICEF Communication Initiative on Life-Skills is an effort to help young Nepalese make responsible decisions and take actions based on information and knowledge. When faced with a choice: to do A or B (e.g. to study medicine because my parents want it or to study business management, which I prefer), amongst other things, it takes analytical skills, a strong information base, an awareness of personal goals and an understanding of the positive and negative consequences of any choice, to choose one over the other. The final choice is also a decision made.
The process of reaching a decision, one that fulfills personal needs as well as the expectations of others (or what is better for you and also better for others) is never simple. It requires the interplay of a number of skills that have been defined as “Life-Skills”, all of which contribute to personal development and effectiveness.
