UN Human Rights Office observes peaceful protests across Nepal on 1 May
PDF File Size: 25 KB | Download
Monitoring today’s rallies in Kathmandu and other parts of the country, the United Nations Human Rights Office in Nepal (OHCHR-Nepal) observed that the rallies by the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) were organised, disciplined and peaceful. The conduct of the security forces was similarly observed to be restrained. "Rights to peaceful assembly and speech were exemplified today. If further public protests are considered necessary they should be conducted in the same spirit. However, more importantly, the parties should avert the risk of confrontation and violations of human rights by taking
concerted steps to bring the peace process back on track", said Richard
Bennett, the Representative of the OHCHR-Nepal.
