The International Day of Peace falls at a critical juncture in Nepal’s own progress towards a
lasting peace. The peace process here is admired around the world seven years since the fighting
ended there has been no return to violence. The forthcoming election is absolutely essential, to complete the new constitution, consolidate the many important achievements that have been made, and move forward in building an inclusive, prosperous and peaceful Nepal.Nepal is rightly proud of its contribution to keeping the peace around the world. Currently Nepal has 4,606 peace keepers in 12 countries. You are the seventh peace keeping contributor to the United Nations. As such, Nepal and its peace keepers are invaluable in maintaining world peace efforts. At home, Nepal has made great strides since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2006.The peace process has been fully Nepali led, and the solutions various hurdles along the way have always been found inside country.Despite the inevitable frustration there is much to celebrate, although people can lose sight of that at times. In particular, the recent completion of the integration of former Maoist combatants into the Nepal Army is an historic achievement. It marks the successful conclusion of a central part of the peace process. It is a model for other peace processes around the world. The importance of these elections for consolidating peace within an accountable and representative democracy cannot be overstated. But elections are not an end in themselves, they are just one step on the path to democracy. Only when the democratically elected Constituent Assembly is in place can the process of completing the constitution be started.
