Workforce Diversity in NGOs: Gender Equality and Social Inclusion status of NGOs in an Eastern Hill district. Issue
PDF File Size: 769 KB | Download
Nepal is home to a vast array of multi-cultural, multi-lingual, multi-ethnic and multi-religious communities, and caste and ethnicity are the basic elements of the social mosaic of Nepal. Those who have noticed less progress in the areas of social and economic development are generally: Dalit communities (both Hill and Madheshi); Janajati communities (both Hill and Tarai; Muslims; Madheshi Other Caste communities; and all women, with women of the above four groups experiencing overlapping exclusion. Differently able and sexual minority groups also face exclusion and often discrimination. The Eastern hills of Nepal are mainly inhabited by Brahman/Chhetris, Dalits, Newars and Janajatis. A
limited number of Madheshis run different businesses and live in the hill districts. Workforce diversity refers to the inclusion in the workforce of people from diverse backgrounds, regardless of their caste, gender, race, ethnicity or other identities. Consequently, proportionate inclusion of excluded
social groups and women within a workforce ensures Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI. The greatest asset of an organization is its workforce (staffs, executive committee and members, and consequently greater diversity can help the transformation of society by recognizing that all communities must be provided the space to contribute to peace building. A diverse workforce boosts the capability of organizations to represent, adapt, and respond to the needs of different identity groups, including those who have historically been
excluded in society. As representatives of civil society as well as development partners of the Government and implementing partners of international agencies, NGOs contribute to Nepal’s development and peace building efforts at
the grassroots level. The diversity of the workforce of NGOs can therefore help foster sustainable peace and development by ensuring gender equality and social inclusion. Staff, Executive Committees and Members of NGOs lead the organisations and manage their resources. In order to ensure GESI, NGOs
should attempt to reach diversity at all levels in these three structures to reflect Nepal social mosaic and benefit from different experiences. In an attempt to study the ground reality in terms of implementation of social inclusion, gender equality and good governance policies, as highlighted in the Nepal Peace and Development Strategy (PDS,this field bulletin looks at nine active NGOs in Tehrathum, Eastern hill district,to get a better understanding
of the status of workforce diversity in national NGOs at the district level.
