Young Entrepreneurs: A solution to Nepal’s unemployment? - Issue No. 24
PDF File Size: 265 KB | Download
Employment acceleration has been recognized as important for Nepal’s peace transition. But joblessness remains high with urban youth unemployment growing from almost eight percent to 13 per cent between 1998 and 20083.It is estimated that Nepal sees 400,000 new jobseekers annually, mostly young women and men from rural areas. It is difficult to identify sectors where jobs can be created quickly for this growing labour force. Previous field bulletins found obstacles for self-employment in the large informal sector, limitations in the employability of returnees from migrant labour and detrimental political conflicts in large industries. This field bulletin looks at the role of business creation as a source of youth employment. It identifies some promising examples of young entrepreneurs who have succeeded in creating jobs. It looks at what made them successful, what obstacles they are facing and why they are not more numerous.
