Across Nepal, natural disasters have killed and displaced as many people in the past 30 years as did the ten year long conflict. Natural disasters often take their toll on the same communities repeatedly, displacing them and destroying their livelihoods, and sometimes fueling disappointment with the state which has limited provisions to offer reparations to the victims. As the flood season has started, this field bulletin documents the fate of communities in two central Tarai districts which suffered repeatedly from floods. It will show how people cope in the short as well as the long term, and how they prepare for future disasters. The communities visited struggled to accommodate
people displaced by the floods, to re-establish their livelihoods, and to cope with the loss of land. Many settlements in the Madi Valley of Chitwan district (see box 1 below) are flooded annually, the river is slowly washing away private land as well as homes and sometimes taking lives. “Floods have been a major problem for a long time and there is no way to resist them, only to escape, if possible”, says Dhane BK of Amaliya Gardi VDC-1, recalling at least ten serious floods of the Riu River in the past 40 years, the last one
on August 24th 2010.
