Health Facility Mapping Survey 2009/2010
PDF File Size: 2.72 MB | Download
The application of field and objectives of a GIS can be varied, and concerned a great number of questions linking social and physical problems. GIS is being used by different sectors where there exists spatial reference and correlation. As health is largely determined by environmental factors (including socio-cultural and physical environment, which vary greatly in space), it always has an important and spatial dimension. The spatial modeling capacities offered by GIS can help one understand the spatial vibration in the incidence of the disease, its co-variation with the environmental factors. The Geographic Information System (GIS) can contribute to improve the health system management in many ways. The current Health Management Information System does not use GIS as integral part of the system. The first steps towards integration of GIS technology into HMIS starts with the preparation of geo-database and mapping of the health facilities with the Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. Therefore, the project on “Health Facility Mapping Survey” was initiated by HMIS/MD/DoHS with the help of WHO/EHA in 2009. It aims to integrate GIS technology into current HMIS for providing new paradigm of spatial-enabled analysis.
The main objective of the survey was to initiate a sound foundation for Health-GIS in Nepal by preparing geo-database, collecting baseline information from health facilities and mapping information in ArcGIS environment. Spatial location and basic information about service availability and health workforce was collected from state and non-state health institutions in the selected twenty-seven districts. To collect information on the above areas three tools were developed for - a) Hospitals and other public health service sites, b) Primary Health Care Centre, c) Health Posts/Sub Health Posts. Central HMIS and Regional Statistical personnel were trained on tools, technology and methodology of the survey. District statistical and computer personnel were trained to collect the necessary data from health facilities assuming that those personnel pose sound knowledge about the research/surveys and data management. Data/information from altogether 1711 health facilities was processed to produce the report from the following 27 survey districts.
