In recent years in developing countries increasing emphasis has been placed on promoting the employment and income generation potential of the rural non-farm sector. Growing population pressure, saturated urban labour markets and continuing low levels of agricultural output require the creation of additional economic opportunities in rural areas in order to raise living standards and retain human resources in these regions.
