The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) constitute the current global framework for development, constituting eight goals and a number of targets to be achieved before 2015. Recognizing that indigenous peoples have been largely excluded from the MDG processes, the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) decided to dedicate its Sessions in 2005 and 2006 to exploring how the MDGs can potentially include and benefit indigenous peoples.
MDG 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
MDG 2: Achieve universal primary education
MDG 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
MDG 4: MDG 5 and MDG 6: Addressing health issues
MDG 5: Ensure environmental sustainability
MDG 6: Global partnership for development
