The Kingdom of Nepal is a multi-ethnic and multilingual nation. Its rich linguistic and cultural heritage constitute an important part of the nation as well as of the world and deserve our concern and attention. This volume includes information on the current situation of a total of sixty languages that are either spoken or at least understood in Nepal today. The questionnaires were filled in by native speakers of each language or, where such persons could not be found or reached, by linguists who had studied the language in depth. It was unfortunate that, owing to the situation at present, we were unable to collect data by going to the various locations of the languages covered in this report. However, at the same time, we were able to find speakers of all the languages right here in Kathmandu. In a sort of chain reaction, once we had identified one person, we would be guided to others from the same general area but from a different language group. While some of these were on short visits from the remote area, others had been living, working or studying in Kathmandu for a longer period of time, but had visited their home area regularly. We also, in most cases, were able to crosscheck with several individuals from the same language but from a different village or town to ensure accuracy. Thus, we can consider the information given in the questionnaires as accurate, even where it differs from the national census.
