A Comprehensive Review of the Practices of Literacy and Nonformal Education in Nepal
PDF File Size: 424 KB | Download
Non formal education (NFE) as it is understood followed the multiplicities of the country. Religious organizations such as Ashrams ofthe Hindus, Gumba of the Buddhists, Madarsa Makhtab of the Muslims, and Chumlung of the Kirat provided life skills and awareness education through preaching sessions. Skills passed down through families equipped people with vocational and technical education. But these teaching approaches lacked reading, writing, and arithmetic, the 3 Rs of NFE. It was only in the early 1940s that Nepal introduced the 3Rs under adult literacy programs (Sharma, 2059 BS).The then adult literacy program was initiated to train Nepalis as potential British Gorkha Army recruits for India through three forms of educational management viz., by school teachers; by local scribes, and by potential facilitators. This system of NFE program continued up to 1956, the year when NNEPC, the first education plan of Nepal, was formulated.
