The Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal has declared the country a Hindu Kingdom. The Hindu philosophy regarding women has been described in Mauritian by Man u, the lawgiver. The text says that women’s main duty lies in obeying and serving their fathers, brothers and other male members of the family when they are young. They should get married as wished by their parents as young as possible. In some castes, this practice is so entrenched that they are married off before attaining puberty. And after they are married off, they should serve their husbands, fathers-in-law, mothers-in-law and other senior male and female members of the family. When they grow older they should follow the advice of their sons. Thus, women are made subservient to male members of the family
throughout their life. Besides, daughters lack rights on parental property. Even the mother is required to seek permission from her son(s) to sell the property.
