The Swayambhu Stupa is as engulfed in legend as it is by advancing mist in winter, Sweeping around corners, climbing over the trees, swirling over the gravel paths and up the hill called Gopuccha. They say that the eternal flame can never be extinguished; they say that a great sage still lives inside the Shantipur having achieved immortality and that the lotus with the thousand petals still exists. The stupa or chaitya in Sanskrit, and chorten in Tietan is not only one of the most venerated Buddhism sites in Nepal and of the most sacred in Kathmandu,it also symbolizes the creation of the valley itself.
