Madhyapur Thimi Municipality is one of the two municipalities established in 1997 in Kathmandu Valley. This young municipality lies in between Bhaktapur Municipality on its east and Kathmandu on west. The southern border is River Hanumante separating it from Laliptur District. Geographically, this municipality lies within 270 40’ 00” to 270 40’ 00” N Latitudes and 810 22’ 30” to 850 25’ 00” E Longitudes, at an average altitude of 1300 meters average mean seal level. Encompassing 11. 47 square kilometers of land this municipality is a plateau-like formation in-between Manahara and Hanumante plains, Thimi is the major town along with Bode and Nagadesh in this municipality. These three townships were established during Malla regime. Popular for its pottery and green vegetables, this municipality was one of the important agricultural production centers of Kathmandu Valley. After 1950, an important educational center was established at Sanothimi. This includes several important education institutions like Janak Education Material Centre, Education campus of TU, Central School Examination Control Board, CTEVT, TITI, and many others. After the construction of Arniko Highway, liking Kathmandu to Kodari, the border of Tibet Autonomous Region of China, the flood plains of Thimi were attractive place for industries. Establishment of Nepal Tuberculosis Hospital, several schools and colleges, have further attracted people to this municipality.
The fast pace of migration of people from all over the country after 1990 engulfed almost all parts of the municipality. The municipality is crossed by two major roads along its length, viz. Arniko Highway in its south and old Bhaktapur road from middle. Recently a new road has been opened linking the municipality to North-eastern part of Kathmandu District. This road links Thimi via Bode to Mulpani and Gokarna. The population of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality is 47, 751 as per the census of 2001. Taking the annual growth rate of 4. 01%, present population may be projected to be 55, 410. The municipality is divided into 17 wards. Apart from historic and densely populated areas like Thimi, Bode and Nagadesh, the flood plain of Hanumante is converting into residential areas due to its nearness to Arniko Highway.
