Tigni, a low-income settlement in the north of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality(MTM), is one of the poorest in the municipality and, indeed, in Kathmandu Valley as a whole: more than 88 percent of residents live under the international poverty line of USD 1 per person per day. This traditional settlement of Rajbahaks, a community famous for its production of beaten rice, consists of 809 residents, 420 males and 389 females, in 146 households. Before the project, water and sanitation infrastructure was lacking and health and hygiene was a grave problem. Less than half the households had toilets; water sources were unsanitary; drains
were poorly managed, leaving road constantly mud spattered;people defecated in the open ;hand washing was not regularly practiced and homes were unventilated and often smoky.
In 2005 CIUD, in partnership with WAN, launched water and sanitation upgrading measures in Tigni. UN-HABITAT joined them later to conduct a comprehensive poverty mapping exercise using methodologies designed to facilitate pro-poor, gender-sensitive, and environmentally-sustainable water and sanitation development to every household in low-income settlements in Nepal. Using the findings of this activity, the three organisations, in association with MTM, worked with the community to prepare a detailed water and environmental sanitation improvement (WESI) plan for Tigni.
