UN-HABITAT initiated the WAC Programme Nepal after receiving letter of interest from Ministry of Physical Planning and Works (MPPW), the Government of Nepal (GoN) in November 2004. The overall objective of the WAC-Nepal Programme is to demonstrate innovative initiatives on water and sanitation sector which can be scaled up to help meet MDG target at the local level.
The specific objectives are:
- To achieve pro-poor water and sanitation investments in selected peri-urban centres and/or small towns.
- To enhance institutional and human resources capacities at local levels for the sustainability of water and sanitation services.
- To enhance local capabilities for participation in service delivery.
- To enhance economic development in small urban centres through improved water and sanitation as well as related income generating activities.
- To access safe, reliable, environmental friendly and affordable modern energy services for sustainable development and poverty alleviation and for achieving the MDG.
