In response to the water crisis and to realize KV’s potential to harvest rainwater, UN-HABITAT, in coordination with the NGOFUWS and in partnership with the Ministry of Physical Planning and Works (MPPW) and WaterAid Nepal (WAN), launched the innovative Rainwater Harvesting Promotion Programme (RWHPP).
The project aims to build the Valley’s capacity to harvest rainwater as well as to demonstrate and to promote this technology in Nepal by setting up model RWH systems and disseminating information to the general public about their effectiveness and advantages.
In January 2006, the NGOFUWS officially launched the twelve-month pilot RWHPP in the five municipalities of the KV—Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kirtipur, Madhyapur Thimi—and in the town of Banepa town. On the occasion of World Water Day, 22 March, 2005, It declared the Nepali calendar year 2062 B.S. (2005-2006) “Rainwater Harvesting Year”.
The RWHPP employed four basic approaches. Under policy advocacy, it lobbied to make the construction of RWH systems mandatory in building by-laws. In addition, it organised capacity-building workshops to train technicians, such as plumbers, civil engineers and architects, as well as probable clients, including students and housewives. Third, the programme ran a help-desk which matched potential clients with trained plumbers. Finally, since seeing often precedes believing, the programme established demonstration sites.
