Attariya is a growing urban area of Kailali District in Far Western Development Region. It is one of nodal center, located at the crossing of Dhangadi-Dedeldhura Highway (North-South) and East-West Highway. The project area, Attaria Nagar
Bikash Samiti and surroundings, covers parts of Malakheti VDC (Wards 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9), Gita VDC (Wards 1, 2, 3 and 6) and Shreepur VDC (Wards, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). It is an emerging market area characterized as rapid urbanization and high rate of migration from the hilly region. This feature highlights the need of mapping and assessment of urban population and appropriate urban planning. The approximate area covered by the project is 66.7 square kilometer in total comprising the population of 39,048. The population density per square kilometer is 585 persons, which is higher than the average population density of the district.
According to the poverty analysis, out of total 2.0 percent falls on extremely poor class and 51.2 percent in poor class. About 34.6 percent households fall under vulnerable group whereas only 12.2 percent households are in non-poor category. Vulnerable group is the group situated in the transitional zone of poverty. They may move either to the non-poor category or fall to the poor category.
Poverty mapping, gender assessment and need identification is a supplementary programme for Urban and Environment Project (UEIP) and Urban Development Project (UDP) that have been implemented by Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC), which have aimed to bring sustainable urban development through poverty information base in nine municipalities and one small town. The supplementary programme has aimed to enhance gender responsive pro-poor urban governance at local urban authorities and strengthen their respective institutional capacity, through the availability of poverty information base to be utilized for planning and services provided by the municipalities.
