Nepal lies between two large countries, India on the southern, eastern and western boundaries and the Tibet region of China on the northern. According to the 2001 census, Nepal has a population of 23.1 million. Compared to other
countries in Asia-Pacific region, Nepal has a low but increasing level of urbanization: about 15% percent of the population currently live in 58 municipalities, but this number could increase to 25% by the year 2015. Internal migration to these cities is increasing because rural areas lack basic social and physical infrastructures and economic opportunities. The 10- year-long conflict also contributed to the increase as villagers fled violence in the countryside. The average national population growth rate is 2.25% Three Year interim Plan(TYIP), but some major cities and towns, including Kathmandu Valley, report higher rates (UEIP Final Report 2002). About 31% of the population live below the poverty line, and the human poverty index is 38.7
(Human Development Report,2005). The annual average growth rate for agriculture is 2.8% and for non-agriculture about 5.2%. The literacy rate is is 63% and the net school enrolment rate in primary education (TYIP) is 87.4%. In terms of health, the total fertility rate is 3.1, the maternal mortality rate is 275 per 100,000, 53% use modern contraceptive methods and the neonatal, infant and
under-five child mortality rates per 1000 live births are 87, 48 and 55
respectively (Nepal Demographic Health Survey, 2006).
