With the rapid urbanization in the country, extension and management of water supply and sanitation infrastructures have emerged as a challenge in Nepal. The low investment made; particularly in peri-urban and poor settlement areas; has resulted in their environmental degradation and they are left out from the development mainstream. In this context Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) is carrying out water and environmental sanitation activities in such areas focusing to poor and deprived. It is expected that these initiatives will support to meet the Millennium Development Goals set by UN. Water Aid Nepal and Water for Asian Cities Programme of UN-HABITAT are primarily assisting these initiatives. Lubhoo is one of such settlements where CIUD has joined hands with the local community to improve water and environmental sanitation condition of the settlement. With these objectives the Water and Environmental Sanitation Improvement Programme was launched in 2006. This intervention has directly benefited 807 households out of total 1115.
