Nepal ranks of 144th among 174 countries in terms of Human Development(UNDP,1999). Its social indicators manifest the poor achievements in social development. Nepal's development lags behind that of other South Asian countries, which are also among least developed nations in the world. Nepal, according to the Human Development Report for South Asia(1999), is the poorest social sector performer in the entire region. The situation of children and women in Nepal is worse than the national average and there are also significant differences in the human development levels of different districts. These variations justify separate studies of human development indicators, especially those relating to child health and development in the different districts.
