The UNESCO workshop on "Community Learning Centres: Evaluation and Future Directions” was held January 27-29, 2004 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The overall objective of the workshop was to assess the first phase of three Community Learning Centres (CLCs), which completed three years of operation in 2002/2003. These initial CLCs were specifically designed to promote literacy, basic lifeskills, non-formal education, and community development initiatives. In order to evaluate the efficacy of the CLCs, UNESCO asked the Research Centre For Educational Improvement and Development (CERID) to undertake a thorough investigation of the Centres and to make suggestions for improvement. Thus, the workshop largely focused on CERID’s findings and recommendations. At the same time, it aimed to facilitate information sharing between all relevant stakeholders. It further sought to enhance the implementation and sustainability of CLCs as well as to build human capacity. Lastly, it endeavored to review the educational and literacy programmes of the CLCs and to prepare policy guidelines in keeping with the Education For All (EFA) goals.
