Abstract:
Engaged in bid road construction programme and faced with a shortage of skilled labour for this work as well as for the development of industry and hydro-electric power generation in a country with an economy still based primarily on agriculture, Nepal is developing the vocational training facilities of the Engineering Institute in Kathmandu. With the assistance of the International Labour Organisation as executing agency for the United Nations Development Programme, the Institute is developing three-year courses for overseers and supervisors in road and bridge construction and maintenance, building construction, irrigation and water supply and electrical installation. Shorter courses are being offered for skilled workers, as well as upgrading and refresher programmes. The ILO has contributed a team of experts to the Institute, with some equipment and administers experts to the Institute, with some equipment and administers fellowships in industrialised countries for the Nepalese staff.
